We're recruiting! Help us grow.

November 9, 2023

Compost London is recruiting our first Chief Executive Officer – someone to help us take the organisation into its next phase of development. Find out more and apply now

Compost London exists to help voluntary and community groups and organisations grow and thrive, hence our name.  Founded in 2017 by a team of community development professionals working in east London’s voluntary and community sector for many years, we offer a range of support services and consultancy including mentoring, training, research and evaluation, organisational reviews and planning, in Newham and beyond.  We’ve achieved a lot in a short space of time, including playing a pivotal role in supporting and coordinating the local sector’s Covid response; bringing together Newham’s Anti-Poverty Alliance; partnering UCL in developing the Evaluation Exchange; and delivering Compost Newham – the local VCSE infrastructure contract for Newham Council.

Our values and ethos are at the forefront of everything we do, including: providing tools and developing long-term skills & capacity, rather than doing things ‘for’ our service-user organisations; engaging with the whole sector, working to include less-heard voices; co-producing & tailoring services to meet organisations’ needs in their specific situations; aiming for sustainable, sector-led solutions; working reflectively and encouraging this in others; and bringing new ideas to the sector.

We're now at a pivotal time in our development and are looking for an energetic and enthusiastic CEO who's as passionate about supporting the voluntary community sector as we are.

About the CEO Role

This is an exciting role, at a significant time in our organisation’s development.  We want our very first CEO to support our transition from a director-led organisation by working with us to develop their role, reshape the organisation, and diversify our people and income streams to enable Compost to continue to deliver responsive, quality services to VCSEs.

Who we are looking for

To succeed in the role, you will need to have:

An Affinity with and commitment to Compost’s ethos and values of collaboration, coproduction, reflexivity, accountability, transparency, honesty and integrity, equity and inclusion.

The ability to shape and deliver strategy – to think and work strategically, whilst ensuring plans translate into high-quality services.

Experience of leading and managing change in an organisation.

Excellent leadership and people skills – to work effectively with a diverse range of people within Compost, the VCSE sector, and beyond, to influence and bring out the very best in others.

Understanding the challenges and opportunities facing the VCSE sector in an urban context, including the role of infrastructure organisations in promoting equity, inclusion and diversity.

Effective project and financial management and communication skills.
