The Power of Small: Celebrating Small Charities in Newham

Small Charity Week (22–29 June) is an opportunity to recognise the organisations that make a difference every day in our communities.

Whether supporting migrants and refugees, young people, older residents, families experiencing poverty, or people facing loneliness and poor health, small charities are often the first place people turn for help.

In Newham, that contribution is particularly important. Our borough faces significant challenges, including some of the highest levels of homelessness and health inequality in the country. Yet every day, small charities, community groups and volunteers provide practical support, trusted relationships and opportunities for local people to thrive.

They may be small, but they are a major part of our voluntary sector. Across North East London, 61% of VCFSE organisations have an annual income of less than £100,000. These organisations are deeply rooted in their communities, able to respond quickly to local needs and build trust in ways that larger organisations often cannot.

At Compost London, we see their impact every day. Over the last year, we have provided more than 250 hours of support to over 60 voluntary and community organisations, helping them strengthen their governance, secure funding and increase their impact.

For small charities are to continue supporting our communities, they need investment, skills, connections and recognition for the vital role they play.

During Small Charity Week, take a look at the excellent free resources available through the Small Charity Week campaign, including governance tools, funding opportunities, a free online risk register and practical downloadable resources.

We also invite you to join The Power of Small, hosted by Compass Wellbeing at the Mary Ward Centre on 25 June from 10am–1pm. The event will bring together charities, community organisations and local partners to celebrate Small Charity Week, share learning and explore how we can work together more effectively. Compost London's CEO, Sandra White, will be speaking as part of the panel discussion.

Small charities are the bricks and mortar foundation that build the VCFSE sector. They may be small in size, but they are fundamental to the strength and resilience of our communities. This Small Charity Week, let's celebrate their contribution and ensure they have the support they need to continue thriving.
